A Black Woman should be a symbol of LIBERTY too! This shirt was inspired by the first Juneteenth EVER! After finding out they had legally been free for 30 months, there are accounts of former slaves taking clothes from the women and men who unfairly kept them in slavery in order to wear something nice to celebrate their newfound freedom. Considering what had been taken from these women who had spent their lives working for free, it is empowering to know the value that was placed on removing their slave clothes and putting on something beautiful that was only allowed to be worn by free women at the time. The woman on the shirt is dressed like a woman would have been dressed in the 1860s, but modeled after the statue of liberty to honor the freedom that rang for African-Americans that day. As we know today, there is still so much more work to be done, but I wanted her be a beautiful reminder of the New Era they were walking into the day they found out they were free.
