In 1868, the 14th Amendment declared that all citizens had the right to vote. In 1920, women gained the right to vote. However, Jim Crow laws kept black people from truly voting until the Voting Rights Act of 1965. We haven't even been voting freely for 100 years and it is a harsh reality to sit with. These shirts were created to honor the black women who fought for our right to vote. They are often left out of the history books but it is because of their sacrifice that we can use our voice at the polls this year. It's easy to be discouraged by our current political climate and think that your vote doesn't matter, but it does! We can't sit this election out or be refused our right. Black votes matter because black people matter and we have to vote with that in mind.
