She was born a slave but she became a teacher, a journalist, an early pioneer of the Civil Rights Movement and one of the founders of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. She was one of the first known African American feminist because she fearlessly used her writing to expose racism, and she is best known for her anti-lynching campaign that was honest about horrors of lynching in America during the time she lived in.
