Born into slavery in North Carolina in 1858, Anna Julia Cooper became one of the most influential educators, scholars, and thinkers of her generation. A contemporary of W.E.B. Du Bois, Cooper believed that education was one of the most powerful tools for freedom and progress, and she dedicated her life to expanding opportunities for Black Americans.

In 1925, at the age of 67, Cooper became the fourth Black woman in American history to earn a Ph.D. Throughout her career, she taught, wrote, and led schools, including Washington D.C.'s renowned M Street School, where she challenged expectations and advocated for rigorous academic opportunities for Black students.

Long before the term "Black feminism" existed, Cooper argued that the advancement of Black women was essential to the advancement of the nation itself. In her groundbreaking book A Voice from the South, she championed the education, leadership, and intellectual contributions of Black women, making her one of the earliest voices of Black feminism in American history.
